Stump Removal
 

Will be having an old tree removed from my backyard sometime in the next few
weeks. The tree surgeon doesn't remove stumps, so there will be a 2' stump
left in my backyard. Is it possible to remove the stumps of older trees? How
difficult and expensive is it?

I suppose I could always use it to put a bird bath on top of.

I guess it depends on whether the tree that is cut likes to coppice. Gums
are particularly bad sending up new sappy growth.

I am not to 100% sure but I think it maybe possible to hire a stump grinder.

Very easy with a stump mulcher/grubber - cost hmm not sure around $75?
Been ages and ages since I had a price extremely effective though and
nothing left afterwards except for wood shavings.

You can hire stump grinders but unless you are VERY confident and STRONG,
don't! They are big, heavy and very dangerous - basically a massive
circular saw that cuts the crap out of the stump - it can give you quite a
kick back if you aren't experienced.

No matter what the cost of having the cost of the stump ground it will be
less then the cost of physio for a damaged back if you try and do anything
about it yourself.

I had one done some years ago after struggling with it for days, for $50 and
15 minutes to clean up it was all gone!

Hire a person who operates a stump grinder, the tree surgeon should be able
to recommend one or use the yellow pages. It's a specialist job, I wouldn't
try using one myself they are rather dangerous machines like a very heavy
chain saw on wheels.

There is a bloke near Doonside in Sydney who specialises in removing things with
high explosives. ;-)

g'day wanda,

haven't read other posts yet, but you can get guys with stump grinders
and you will have some extra wood chip for the garden. not sure what
they charge but worth it to get rid of the stump in rapid time. if it
is a green tree i think there is a product you can buy to help make
the stump rot away faster.

Many Tree Removalists in WA use stump grinders to remove them at up to 30cm
below ground level. The machines come on the back of a trailer or truck and
don't need a huge amount of space to manoeuvre. Try ring around.

Wanda,

There are stump grinders ie people who do just that. No idea of cost. I
burnt the middle out of mine and planted some agapanthas in it. Nasturiums
would look good. Gardens need some difference in height, don't you think?
The next two old rotten trees that are coming down in my place will be cut
off to waist height then I'll put a bench on it for a table in the vegie
garden.

of termites which will cost you heaps of money if the termites get in there

Now, that /really/ depends on how you feel about termites. You could
look at your stump as a convenient early warning (or decoy) system for
your house, if it's near enough to your house, as termites will prefer
damp rotting wood to the (hopefully) dry solid wood that your house is
made of.

Don't beleive the paranoia of the pest controlers. It's in their
interest to give you a worst case scenario.

G'day,
I'm with Sandra, just level off or clean up the top, and while
you are sitting on your flash new garden seat you can think up good idears
of what to do. If you want it dead, then zero any re-growth. If you don't
mind it re-growing, then shape the shoots so you dont have to cut it down so
severly again. If the white ants move in, then you now know they are around
so check your ant capping, better they eat you flash new garden seat than
your house! If it was my stump, I would put a rustic table top on it, and
use fold up chairs that I could put out of the weather when I'm not using
them. If you can drill a serious hole down the middle, then it would also be
a really good stand for one of those garden umbrellas that are getting so
cheap these days.
