Native garden

I'm looking for ideas for selecting shrubs for an australian native garden
to shield my house from the street. Can anyone suggest any plant choices or
recommend a good web site/book?
Thanks
Claude

Heck, where to start??

I prefer to use endemics (local species) -- your council may have a list, or
even give away free plants at certain times of year.

Then consider the space you have available and what you are shielding from --
noise? dirt? wind? sun? From that you can work out the heights you need.
If there are pipes running under the bed, don't plant trees right on top of
them.

Use a specialist native nursery if you can -- they have more expertise. And
consider joining the Australian Plants Society (they have local groups that
are very helpful to novices).

I have found the book "The Australian Garden" - Designing with
Australian Plants by Diana Shape ISBN 1 876473 33 9 inspirational. Many
beautifull pictures that give you ideas and a wide range of topics is
covered. She advocates to use indigenous (local) plants but covers the
whole of Auatralia. Today we bought a hybrid grevillea which will grow
2 - 3 metres high and will screen out the concrete water tank. One type
of shrub you could consider but there are of course myriad of options.
Hopefully you can find the book and see if it is worth buying.

Cheers,

Ernie

Browse http://www.floraforfauna.com.au/ for some native planting ideas.
Unfortunately, I've often found it difficult to purchase the native plants I
select from books or reference material, so I often just wander around local
nurseries and buy whatever natives are readily available :)

Flowering Gums won't give you shielding from the street but they do
attract Native Birds. One or two Flowering Gums depending on the size of
your front yard.

Flowering Gums don't grow to huge proportions. I have a five year old
Flowering Gums about 20 Feet high and the Magpies love it.
