kikuyu getting a yellow patch - help ?
Hi,
I inherited a kikuyu lawn when I bought my house last year and I have now got it looking quite good after the previous owners' dogs had made a mess of it. Anyway just before christmas I noticed a patch of grass turning a yellowish colour. The blades aren't actually dead just yellow and it has gradually been getting bigger. The majority would fit in a 1m diameter circle but there is a small amount spread further than this also. I've tried giving it a watering with liquid fertilizer and make sure it gets a watering whenever I water the garden but nothing seems to be helping. Does anyone have any ideas as to what might be causing it ? Thanks in advance David |

There are no known diseases to kike as far as I know and if liquid fertilising hasn't worked then you could try a light fertilising with dynamic lifter in the area. If the area is not overly wet or dry, nothing has been spilt there or there is no seepage from something underground then the only option is to pull all the grass from that affected area, plant runners from elsewhere on the lawn and try again. If that fails try removing the soil as well, and bringing in new stuff then re-plant. I just thought, you could try getting some soapy water made with rubbing a cake of soap in a bucket of water for a while (sunlight soap works well), and pour it on the border of the affected area. If small grubs or even black beetle come to the surface that could be it and get some spray for it. Good luck |

Thanks in advance David Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but it sounds like you have what is called 'Kikuyu yellows' for which there is no known cure. If you get it badly enough it will eventually kill off all your kikuyu. We got it badly on our farm where we had kikuyu improved pastures. Came out of the blue and devastated the place. -- Kind regards, Graeme Nichols ---------------------------------------------------------------------- It's always darkest just before the lights go out. -- Alex Clark ---------------------------------------------------------------------- - IMPORTANT. - - The contents of this email and any attachments, which may be con- - - fidential, are sent for the personal attention of the addressee/s - - only.
