Just saw the other thread on bindies which reminded me....

When is the best time to best for clover? - I did it selectively about a
month ago and it didn't seem to make much difference.

The clover is going gangbusters now, and I'd really like to get rid of it!

I have Sir Walter buffalo and use a spray which claims to not kill buffalo,
but also says it needs more than one application to kill clover... so I
guess I need to do it again, but the bottle doesn't say how long to wait
between applications! (Sorry I don't have the name of the brand with me at
the moment... which isn't realy helpful I know!)

I've spent tens of hours trying to dig the clover out, but it just keeps
coming back.... is there anything I can do?

It took me 7 years to completely eradicate clover from a place I previously
lived in. Spraying with Clover & Bindi killer for about 5 years then pulling
out the odd one that came up after that. It is a lifelong obsession (or
profession) getting on top of the old clover burr.

Sounds like you are talking about two different plants.

The only good reason I can think of to remove clover is to have less bees on
the lawn when you have barefoot people around. If you sprinkle clover
liberally with sulphate of ammonia it will die of nitrogen poisoning.

The local variety flowers and the seed pod is a burr. It is a nitrogen
fixing legume, can see the nodules when pulled out. The burr is the only
reason to kill it. The non-burr clover looks and feels the same except the
seed pod.

Just be careful with it. I have seen the same named product (but maybe a
different brand) and it had a warning for buffalo as to either apply once a
year only, no more, or at half rate or both.
One of the many downfalls (that I see anyway) of owning buffalo, sorry, just
my opinion.
Follow directions as suggested is best advice. On top of that I've noticed
that when spraying with a broadleaf killer, using a drench option is much
more effective. I was spraying with not a high success rate. Then I noticed
one brand (Hortico) suggested application with a "hortico sprinkle bar". Not
having one, nor knowing what it was I decided a watering can would be
similar. I walked at a semi fast pace using a watering can to water the lawn
with broadleaf killer mix. Best kill rate ever. At work we now use coarser
spray nozzles, with lower pressures for same effect with better kill rates.
Of course you have to take into accont roots of surrounding plants, and
runoff, and possibly the fact you have buffalo, but on couch it works great.

Thanks Andrew - I think I'll need the luck.

I'll give the drenching method a go on one part of the lawn and the sulfate

The sulphate of ammonia to your buffalo grass? Well if you sprinkle it over
the clover heavily, then the clover will die, and the ground may become
infertile. The idea of the sulphate is it kills the clover due to fert burn.
I did try it on broadleaf weeds in my buffalo lawn, sprinkling heavy on
centre of weeds. Worked well, but the weeds were small and buffalo overtook
dead patches. In larger areas it will take longer for buff to overtake it,
and if the fert is too strong it may stop anything growing in that soil for
a while.
If you try it water the buff around the clover after fert application, but
don't water the clover. Idea being the fert will burn the clover off.
I have since replaced my buffalo with greenleas park couch, best thing I
ever did for reasons of broadleaf weeds in buffalo can be a pain.
