Default Grass

What type of grass seeds can I buy that will spread???
From what I've seen, when I try to grow from see, it is one strand of grass
per seed(if I'm lucky) and it doesn't spread....

I saw a few grasses in tiny packets (like what you buy plant and vegie
seeds) one was Kykuyu (however ever its spelt) I've heard in the past that
that one spreads... is this why is come in such a small packet??? Cause not
as much is needed?

Its just to repair the lawn on the footpath that has been damaged by people
and cars over time and has large dirt patches...
any help would be appreciated.

Regards
Glen

That was probably perrenial ryegrass. It's typical of seed you buy in boxes
at kmart and similar. It may look good for a while, but isn't really good
for yards or high traffic areas. Good bor bank, roadside stabilisation
though.

Not as much is needed over the same area. Be careful to follow the rates
over area carefully. Couch is another that can be bought and spreads, but
kykuyu would be good for the area you want to do.
A good way of doing it is get a jar and put some holes into the lid, so you
make a type of pepper/salt shaker, making sure holes are big enough for seed
to go through. Fill it with sand, then sprinkle it over the area you have to
do. Enough to finely coat it, that's all. Now measure the amount of sand you
used, by checking what you have left in jar, and take note.
Now measure the area in square metres you need to do, and get that amount of
seed, and mix it with the measured amount of sand you noted earlier.
Mix the sand and seed well, then sprinkle over area, making sure you shake
and twirl the sand seed mix as you go so neither settle in the jar.
THis should give you a relatively even coat. It might be overkill, but it
does save problems when planting seed will have runners when it germinates.
Good luck

You might want to loosen up the soil in the compacted areas or you may
struggle to get seed to germinate. Be sure to keep the people and cars off
it once seed has been spread and grass is well into growing.
