running the slasher over tv gardening
There are big changes afoot in the Australian televison gardening scene.
Don Burke and 'Burkes Backyard' will wind up this month after 17 years with Channel 9, and all but one of the presenters on ABCs 'Gardening Australia' segment are to lose their contracts at the end of the year. Also, while on a gardening theme, Sorrel is being dumped from Getaway. I hope the tv moguls aren't paving the way for more 'makeover' shows?? -- John Savage (news address invalid; keep news replies in newsgroup) |

Maybe, but it could also mean that more gardeners are forced to indulge their hobby by vicarious means, e.g., watching others gardening on the idiot box? Also, it might mean that gardeners downsize to pot growing (!) so the interest might not wane, just change. -- John Savage (news address invalid; keep news replies in newsgroup) |

Yes, but that doesn't sell shovels, Roundup or bags of Dynamic Lifter, or in Auntie's case magazines and books. -- "Darwin's rolling over in his coffin, 'cos the fittest are surviving much less often" - NOFX |

Burkie hopes to keep on publishing his magazine, too. Anyway, is there much money to be made in selling shovels?? Nurseries must love people with lots of plants in pots, there being a high turnover in seedlings the things die so easily when they are totally dependent on regular watering. -- John Savage (news address invalid; keep news replies in newsgroup) |
