Default Bamboo Institute in Brazil completes social housing project - 40m2 home for $1500 - A great accompli

Translation of Raphael Vasconcellos post to bambu-brasil:

Acting as a representative of INBAMBU, Édson Sartori (engineer), and
Rubens Cardoso (architect), I hereby announce that the Bamboo
Institute completed during this week their social bamboo house (which
combined colombian techniques, lightweight "bahareque" (cob) wall
structure, and roofing joinery). There will be an open-house until
Friday, where the governor of Alagoas Ronaldo Lessa will join us
along with other delegates.

This house was built in a disadvantaged community of Juvenópolis, the
neighborhood of Bebedouro, next to the Municipal Park of Maceió,
where Bambusa Vulgaris is quite abundant.

The approximate cost of this house was 4,200 reais (1475 dollars
approxiamately).

INBAMBU's prototype furniture will be in exposition inside the house
during the week.

Here is a link to a photograph detailing the front view of the
construction:

[note: This project is based on the Costan Rican housing project and
adapted to Brazilian standards and local conditions in the region
(Alagoas/Brazil) by the Bamboo Institute. The area covers 38.4 square
meters (2 rooms, living room, bathroom, kitchen, and porch), cost
$4,200 reais ($1475), which represents a 40% reduction in cost of a
typical concrete home. Is that inexpensive?

Economically viable, easy to use, highly durable, and exotic--bamboo
has been used for many decades in other countries in Latin America
and Asia, but only now is being used in Brazil. Research has shown
that bamboo's fibers are resistent when mixed with concrete,
eliminating the necessity of steel (expensive and high consumption of
energy/resources).

Let's build some more!

como porta-voz do INBAMBU e do Édson Sartori (eng.) e Rubens Cardoso
Jr (arq.) anuncio que o Instituto do Bambu esta semana concluiu a
construção da casa popular de bambu (combinando estruturas de estilo
colombiano, paredes de bahareque oco, e tesouras de ripas unidas). A

This is QUITE AMAZING! if architects were thoroughly aquainted with
the derivation (the real history) of structure, they would be full of
knowledge of the agricultural materials which form the basis for all
so called modern structural shapes, and would fall back easily into
thinking like this. alas, zoning laws in the US may be in the way of
much of this kind of thing.
