How can I get rid of bamboo from my garden?
When we moved in it was taking over, how can I kill some of it?

I honestly don't know what type of bamboo it is.

Its just the common bamboo with green leaves and green stems that mature
into the 'canes' you get at garden shops...its very invasive and the roots
are quite extensive - we've bent a stainless-steel fork trying to dig them
up!!

The received wisdom is that you cut it down, and then whenever a shoot appears
(which should start happening soon and continue into the summer) cut that away
(perhaps by mowing) - and repeat for a couple of years. I'm in the UK too.
How tall is it, and what diameter are the canes ?

There are two selective herbicides that should work in your area; both
may require repeated applications. The first is Fusilade and the
second being any product that contains glyphosphate such as Roundup
Ultra. If the usage of specific herbicides displeases you then I would
recommend contacting any local zoological gardens in your area for
supplemental information that might be available regarding locale
specific bamboo control.
