[IBC] Air layering question for my hot weather friends

Jim,

1. The layer has been doing well and it is a pretty good flush of new
growth, which is why I'm tempted to cut it now. I'm afraid that as vigorous
as it is, if I leave it till spring, I'll have a lot of root coiling that
will require major root work to fix.

2. The tree is a very nice, twiggy, dwarf cultivar (A. Palmatum
Murasaki Kiyohime) that is one of the few that shows no heat stress in
Dallas. Probably has something to do with the vigorous root stock. Another
variety I'm working with is the shantung maple (A. Truncatum). It has
excellent drought and heat tolerance as well. I'll post a pic of the dwarf
maple on the potensai forum.

Blessings,

Tim Ahlen

If you layer has been doing OK on the tree, I suspect it
will do OK cut off, too -- assuming as you say that there
are a LOT of roots. They should fill the plastic wrap or pot.

Be careful not to break any tender roots when you remove the
plastic or pot. I never try to remove the spaghnum, but
plant it spaghnum and all in a largish shallow pot, tie it
in carefully, then sit it in a shady spot (in your case into
early fall, I suspect. A bit of morning sun probably would
be a benefit.

I'm surprised though that Japanese maples do well in Dallas.
