[IBC] Natural Overwatering - Rain
 

In the recent Mortality thread a few folks mentioned overwatering as a
cause of death for trees.

How does everyone else deal with rainy spells. Like about a week of
overcast skies and rain? Move your trees to a shelter and let them get
a break from the rain or just let them sit out int he rain as if they
were in the garden, obviously most garden plats don't mind a week of
rain but we all know a bonsai pot is not the ground.

or is rain really a concern?

With few exceptions, if the trees are potted in fast-draining soils, all should be well.

If you experience days of heavy downpours, simple slide a wedge under one side of the pot to promote faster drainage.

The problem with constant daily overwatering is that the roots eventually develop fungus and then the roots decay. While the roots can be cut back to new cores to promote replacement growth, the impact on the tree can be devasting--if the tree survives.

All is not lost: use quick draining soils and insert a chopstick into the root pad. Remove it on a daily basis, and touch the portion that was in the soil. When it is almost dry, rewater. In time, you will know when to water each particular tree based on your habits and environment.
