Won't the Turface and screened organic stuff give you good drainage?
Does granite drain that much better than clay granules?

But the Turface and organic material hold water, the granite holds very
little and then only on the rough outside surfaces,

I do have some Shimpaku Junipers planted in a Turface and cypress mulch
mixture (50/50 by volume) and it works OK.

The screened organic stuff will only make a difference for a while. As it
breaks down the "screened" part doesn't matter. To much organic material that
breaks down will result in mush that really holds too much moisture.

The cypress mulch mentioned above has larger particles.
