[IBC] Taxodium distichum (Cipres Virginiano)
 

Hello,
Hope everybody's doing well. I've got another question. I finally broke down and bought a Bald Cypress that I'd been visiting for a while at one of the big box stores. It's about eight feet tall and will be going in the ground soon. I've been reading up
online on Bald Cypress but I'm wondering if there are any differences in care requirements for this particular cultivar.(Cipres Virginiano)
Any tips on planting in the ground would be greatly appreciated.
(i.e. depth)

I was not aware that there were "cultivars" of Bald Cypress. My guess is
that it is nurseryman's creativity. It may be a variety that they have found
does better in the colder climates? A rich soil, plenty of sun and water.
Trunk chop every year before the leaves come out.

Yes. There are four or five cultivars; all aimed at the "yard
tree" crowd (or for those folks who are now overusing the BC as a
parking lot and street tree) and developed for a tall, pyramidal
shape and (usually) with "weeping" foliage. In MY opinion they
are universally ugly. This one, however, must be a new cultivar;
it's not listed in anything I have (but I can't afford to
"update" my books every year. ;-)

Anyway, treat the cultivars just as you would treat the species.
If it's a weepy type, you'll have to pinch and prune branches
more vigorously (and you already have to keep after BC leaves) if
you don't want a bonsai at looks like its drooping for lack of
water. There's a weeping BC that makes the rounds of the big
shows here in Florida, and while the trunk is impressive, I
cannot say the same for the limp foliage.
