The answer is maybe. If the tree has enough energy stores it may re-foliate in spring and live. If the tree is too weak it will just give up. I would not repot it in spring if it is that weak. Repot in early summer after needles harden off. Good luck. Mugho pines are tough little trees. I've never completely defoliated one but came near with a restyle of mine last year. This one is also 'Mops' and had been planted in a raised bed for five years. This thickened the trunk nicely but it was a dense ball of foliage with no inner budding. I removed about 70% of the branches and reduced everything to the lowest candles. It backbudded better than any pine I've ever worked on and is now starting to look like it will eventually make something reasonable. I think yours could well make it. Just treat like most other pines. Full sun, water only when drying. They are completely hardy and don't need frost protection. RHS says down to -15C with no problem. You can cut it back really hard. The swellings can be reduced so long as
the sap lines to the remaining branches aren't interrupted. It responds well and the increased light on the trunk and inner branches will encourage back budding. I also had problems with Mops. Lost 2 out of 4 specimens. Seem to be less
hardy than the species. Still, they are an interesting variety; so I'm still working with them. I'd like to order a pot similiar to the one below. The tree is a black pine and the oval shape will compliment the style of the tree. The tree is very feminine and I believe this pot will work well. I'll need to repot in the Spring 2004, so there's no hur ry. Just wanted to get on your list when you start to throw pots later in the year. I measured and I need approx.16X11X2.5. I have a mugo in a nursery pot and in nursery soil. I plan to move it to a training pot, and the appropriate soil, in the spring when the weather conditions are more agreeable for working with mugo roots in my temp zone. Until two weeks ago the tree was d
oing fine. Within the last two weeks I noticed that the older needles have started to turn brown. Also, laterally the tree is breaking bud and the buds are starting to open with needles approx 1/18 to 1/8 inch in length. While the lateral buds are breakin g, the terminal buds are tight and remain tighly closed as I would expect them to be at this time in the season. The crown remains very green, with no noticable bud break or buds swelling. The crown also does not show and tendency towards browning.
