The "mesh" we all use is called "plastic canvas." It is used as a base by
people doing crafts. It comes in various colors which is not important in
the bottom of a pot. It also comes in different mesh sizes. You want a size
that allows for good drainage without letting the soil run out. Here it is
sold by Wal Mart for less than $1 (US) per 8 x 10 inch sheet.

In answer to one of your questions: "I am planning to repot and am told that I
need some wire mesh at the base of the pot ... Is this essential?"

Yes, it is essential to cover the drainage hole(s) when you repot to keep the soil
from leaking out. It can be wire mesh, but I prefer to use plastic mesh for its
durability. It can be washed and reused many times and does not rust or rot. It is
widely available in stores that sell needlework/arts & crafts supplies. It is sold
in sheets approximately 10 1/2 inches by 13 1/2 inches for about $1.00 per sheet.
With an ordinary kitchen scissors you can cut the plastic mesh to make at least 30
square drainage hole covers for your pots. Be aware that the plastic mesh is
available with various size holes. Ten holes to the inch is too small for general
use. Six holes to the inch or four holes to the inch is better. Keep the plastic
mesh in place by forming a hoop with a piece of wire about 4 inches long. Cover the
drainage holes on the inside of the pot with the plastic mesh which you have cut to
the desired size, push the wire hoop through the holes in the mesh, and anchor the
wire by bending it on the outside bottom of the pot. You can check the archives for
