Default [IBC] Juniper Hands

I just worked on my first Juniper yesterday. I woke up this morning and my
hands are covered with little red marks from the Juniper needles. They're
also a little puffy and uncomfortable.

Does this happen every time or do your hands toughen up after a while? Can
you work on the tree with gloves?

You can try working with latex gloves, but . . .

I find that rubbing a bit of Burt's Bees Bee Balm on my hands
first reduces the pain. But my REAL solution is to not do many
junipers.

Some Junipers are worse than others (Needle Junipers are among the worst).
For those you wear WORK gloves.

Are you sure that this isn't an allergic reaction?

I have not had this problem with either j. procumbens or j. chinensis.

hi all.
some junipers contain a minute toxin , and needles are the injection system.
these are high altitude desert plants, usually, growing in marginal
conditions. this "stinger" is to ward off predators. some individuals are
more sensitive to it than others. some folks also, are sensitive to spider
mites, and will itch and redden when they fool with infested junipers.
