[IBC] pinus strobus backbudding!!
You read it right! Not a lot, but definitely backbudding. This is on a
tree I collected three years ago on a roadside in Maine. It's about 20-30 years old, rough guess. This is it's third year in a mica pot. For the last two years I fertilized it heavily and pinched candles, and this year I wired almost the entire tree. The new buds are not everywhere, and there aren't a lot, but it is a welcome sight. Eastern White Pine is often poo-poo'ed by the experts, but it's my tree and I like it! Craig,
Congratulations on the back budding. Eastern white will back bud when healthy and after pruning it back a bit. Generally the number of back buds are few and far between. You can not count on them appearing in a specific spot. Generally the back buds will be on wood that is less than 10 years old. You are fortunate, and talented, indeed to achieve this back budding. Yes, they do when properly encouraged. My 3-year old pre bonsai also has a few
buds here & there. I don't remember if it was you, but somebody told me not to cut the branches back until the new bud was just about completely grown. Eastern
White Pine is often poo-poo'ed by the experts, but it's my tree and I like it! Only one person has to like it for it to be art!!!! I was told that by an art professor who liked my art, so it must be true! ************************************************** ****************************** ++++Sponsored, in part, by Evergreen Gardenworks++++ ************************************************** ****************************** -- The IBC HOME PAGE & FAQ: http://www.internetbonsaiclub.org/ -- +++++ Questions? Robert Lowell (1917-1977) I don't think that was me, that might be a good idea. I suspect that the buds are a bit on the weak side. The new buds I have are very small compared to the candles on the tips. On the branches that have new buds I'll probably pinch the candles a bit more than usual. Jerry Meislik Whitefish Montana USA Zone 4-5 Thanks Jerry. I'm pleased with the results. My hope was that the tree would respond by being settled in a pot for a long time, to slow down the growth and make it more compact. Someone in Massachusetts, can't remember who, told me that this program was the way to go with white pine, and that it would take several years. Fertilize the living daylights out of it, and pinch candles. Iris and Craig,
I agree, the strobus is quite a weak pine and if you cut back to only a weak bud it is the equivalent of cutting a pine back to no needles on the branch which results in the branches death. The new candles on my white pine are partly grown. The needles are sticking
out, but the pairs of needles haven't separated yet. Is it too early to cut the branches & leader back to that point? ************************************************** ****************************** ++++Sponsored, in part, by Mike Page ++++ ************************************************** ****************************** -- The IBC HOME PAGE & FAQ: http://www.internetbonsaiclub.org/ -- +++++ Questions? No, you can go ahead and pinch them back at this stage.
