[IBC] ramifying underground

I have a large .... about 4 inch trunk diameter maple in the ground. it was
trunk chopped down from about 16 feet this winter and is sprouting nicely.
I'm thinking about digging it up maybe next spring. I would like to start
ramifying the roots while it it still in the ground this year. getting an
axe and a shovel and making a ring around the tree.. severing as many of
the roots as i can..hopefully starting some new root growth closer to the
trunk. does anyone have any experience/tips with this? after i make the
ring... should i place something in the ground around the tree? steve w

[IBC] ramifying underground

Steve,

If the tree is in leaf I would settle for severing roots this year - perhaps
with a long spade/shovel to undercut the tree at a 45 degree angle. When it
is just budding I would completely dig it, cut off the roots that grow down,
and depending upon how experienced you are with roots even doing a complete
root wash. The tile under the root pad after cutting off the downward
growing roots is a good idea. Maples are among the most forgiving for
severe root work if you time it right.
