Default [IBC] Lesniewicz was indoor larch (?) question

When Suthin Sukosolvisit owner of Royal Bonsai was doing a demonstration at
the Bonsai Society of Greater Hartford he noticed Lesniewicz's book (don't
remember which one, but I think it was the Indoor Bonsai one) in our club
library. He asked me if I wanted to see some of his old trees? I said sure,
and he pointed out quite a few ficus in the book. He told me he sold them
before leaving for the U.S. because he couldn't bring them with him.
I want to take this opportunity to highly recommend Suthin for any clubs
looking for a demonstrator he is fantastic. Both clubs I belong to have him
back every year.

I believe the correct spelling is Lesniewicz.
Very few people are aware that Lesniewicz was a businessman, not a bonsai
grower, and his book was actually ghostwritten by several assistants. The
sections on individual species are sometimes helpful, but the chapter on

general
cultural instructions is full of errors.
You are right that much of the information on indoor climates in Europe is
not applicable to the US, especially the Northeast. However, remember that
Lesniewicz advises the reader to grow subtropicals and half-hardy species

in what
he calls a "winter garden," which in this country would be an unheated or
slightly heated conservatory, sunporch, or atrium, quite suited to

temperate
species which are not hardy outdoors. Pseudolarix might do very well

there. What
zone is it supposed to be hardy to?

Was that Bo-tree his? If so, he's the reason I have one. It's gorgeous.

Mina isn't.

I am so disappointed to hear this! Since I live in an
apartment, all I can grow are indoor bonsai. Lesniewicz
has been my primary reference.

If anyone knows of specific errors, could you please
point it out to me?

Are there other books on indoor bonsai that you would
recommend. I already have the slim volume from the
Brookly Botanic Garders, and I like it.

Thanks,
shireen, bonsai beginner

There is a section on Indoor Bonsai in our IBC book review page:
http://www.internetbonsaiclub.org/book_reviews.html

In addition, Colin Lewis' "Bonsai Survival Manual" covers some
indoor species.

Shireen:
Don't be discouraged if you have a book that might not be that good. I
used the same book for over two years.... Just remember that any book's
information must be taken with the knowledge that it is just basic
information. You must learn to interpret that oinformation to work in
your area, even if it is only indoors.

Ask questions of the IBC members, if you have specific doubts.... I
personally have been growing indoor trees for over six years, so I
consider myself fairly new to Bonsai, but I read incessantly, the posts
here, the ABS posts, the www.Gardenweb.com and Bonsai Talk forum. Each
site gives me a little bit of knowledge that I can apply to my own trees.

Joining a club in your area would also be of great help. You also have
the public library.....

Default [IBC] Lesniewicz was indoor larch (?) question

HI I live in Switzerland and Lesniewicz has been one of may foirst
references too I have been to see his zentrum that tehy are extremely
correct in all what they did to satisfy my demands when i bought by
some bonsai..by phone
Of course I quickly noticed that what Les. was explaining did not
match with my personal experience with plants either as swiss or as
italian where I lived nearbyGenova 24 years.. so the conclusion was
that his book was for German country where is often cold and the sky
casted with not as big variations as in NY or Boston that can also be
very cold places
I always advice when people announce in some list to posses his books
to be careful and apply the rules according the zone where they live..
and not to take them as gold rules..
