[IBC] beginner,question on jinning
 
No...without a life line of bark left to the living branch(es) it will
die. I suspect what you saw had a hidden life line on the back of the
tree to support the living branch(es). Unless of course it was a
completely dead tree with no living branches...

It wasn't all jin, there was a lifeline. Or, it might have been a Phoenix
graft. A dead piece of wood is put in front and a live tree wired to the
back. I watched Jim Smith help a club member create one of these a few months
back. It might have even made it to the Florida Convention.

If the tree had leaves/needles, the live bark must have been on
the backside. There HAS to be a "vein" (a bonsai, not a
scientific term) of live wood moving sap and water, etc. up and
down the tree.

An all-jin tree is a dead tree.
