[IBC] tips for mondo grass
Mark:
I am curious to see your answers. My experience is that it needs moisture almost constantly. I have one four-year old, plant in a small flat pot with a tiny ground cover, also, and I keep that pot from ever drying out. It is in a shaded area of the green house, plenty of light but no hot sun. Lynn Lynn Boyd, Oregon, USA Hello all I got some mondo grass this summer and potted it up in accent plant pots. it has sat on a window sill since then and sat is the operative word-has not done much at all.Doesnt seem to grow and leaf tips turn brown. What is the best way to make this stuff happy? Hello all
I got some mondo grass this summer and potted it up in accent plant pots. it has sat on a window sill since then and sat is the operative word-has not done much at all.Doesnt seem to grow and leaf tips turn brown. What is the best way to make this stuff happy? Thanx Mark Mark: I am curious to see your answers. My experience is that it needs moisture almost constantly. I have one four-year old, plant in a small flat pot with a tiny ground cover, also, and I keep that pot from ever drying out. It is in a shaded area of the green house, plenty of light but no hot sun. Lynn Lynn Boyd, Oregon, USA Gosh, maybe it needs constant moisture in a pot. But in MY yard it is a bloomin' pest (but since the blooms are attractive, it is tolerated). In the hot summer, my French (or is that still "Liberty?" ;-) Bulldog and our Aunt's Doberman lie on it because it is cool. They mash out little nests, but it grows (and blooms, and goes to seed) just fine under them. I have it lining both sides of my front walk, and since the birds love the berries it is now appearing in my yard, too. It does do better in fairly heavy shade. I do NOT (repeat, NOT) water it. But pots probably are different. Mondo grass puts out a LOT of root, including runners that can go for 12 feet or more before another &^%$# plant pops up somewhere. Anyone who wants some is welcome to come visit. I will supply the trowel. Are we talking Ophiopogon planiscapus? If so, mine are vine weevil
magnets. They also suffer red spider damage more than most others in my shade house. Constant moisture in the growing period and full sun to partial shade seem to suit mine. The Nigrescens form seems less vigorous and when planted out here gets pulled up by the birds. The large fleshy roots with nodules seem to do better in accent pots with a greater volume of soil rather than very small ones. Hope this helps Kev Bailey Vale Of Clwyd, North Wales Hello all I got some mondo grass this summer and potted it up in accent plant pots. it has sat on a window sill since then and sat is the operative word-has not done much at all.Doesnt seem to grow and leaf tips turn brown. O. japonicus is the most common species around here. There is a dwarf form (Kyoto dwarf) with 2-inch leaves and tiny purple flowers. NEAT! No major bug problems that _I_ know of.
