They're potted in as much of the rather heavy garden soil, liberally
amended with stolen leaves, as came up in the trowel, and the pot filled
with soilless "pro-mix." Though the dirt looks quite dry, the pots still
felt heavy when I moved them to photograph; I did bottom water the tray
they're in just after this was taken.

This is only my personal opinion :
you would have to trim those branches with long internode back.
On the lower branches, I would leave them on to maximize the thicken of
trunk. I also want to wire those lower branches down to give space for upper
branches to develope.
May be next Spring you want to use soil which to not hold water to long. From
my experience that finer soil always give my Serissa a very long internodes
which i do not want.
I always try to have an image of a final tree and working toward that . . . .
Most of the time i am reasoning myself how to arrive at the result but
sometimes in the middle of the process i am seeing a different image of my future
tree. Then I would go with that flow. It is always working better that way.
