How long should one wait to bring a bonsai that has been
repotted into a
smaller pot from the shade back out into the sun? Thanks, Colin

As in so many other things that are bonsai related, it depends .
.. .

on the species,
on your climate, and the strength of the sun in your area, and
whether wind also is a factor,
on how much root/top work was done on the tree,
on how experienced you are at:
1. Doing the transplanting, and
2. Maintaining a stressed tree (of that species).

Deciduous trees often need a longer out-of-the-sun recuperation
area than conifers (I do NOT know about pines), but it depends on
how much leaf they have produced in the spring. Maples, for some
reason, seem to be especially touchy.

If you live in the southern U.S., the western U.S., much of
Central and South America, equatorial Africa, tropics, the sun is
a lot hotter than it is in Boston, Nottingham, Berlin, or
Wellington, no matter what time of year it is.

If you chopped more than 1/3 off the top and/or bottom, it will
need longer recuperation time.
