[IBC] Q:Beech initial root pruning. How much is too much?
So, my question is this: When will I know if this tree is going to survive the rather severe root pruning I gave it last fall? (e.g. when is it "over the hump" in terms of survival?) Does the simple fact that it's now growing well mean that it's likely to survive the root/topside imbalance I created last year or am I facing future disaster? Keep it shaded and out of the wind all summer. Young beech are understory trees (until they are 10-15 years old) when they take over the overstory in a healthy woods. They only put out one flush of growth a year. You should know by July whether this one is living on stored energy or if it will make it. If stored energy, the new growth will wilt and fade and there's no rejuvenation. Good luck.
