Default [IBC] The Quality of Pine Grafts

About the Quality of Grafts:

Most of you will agree that the bonsai market is flooded with thousands of poorly executed grafts--particularly with respect to Japanese White Pine grafted to Japanese Black Pine trunks.

If you are considering the purchase of a Japanese White Pine, be certain to "see" the tree before you take delivery. Abrupt trunk transitions from the understock to the graft will not go away on their own, and it takes a long time and a lot of luck with
tissue swelling techniques to correct the transition.

Are there outstanding examples of Japanese White Pine grafted to Japanese Black Pine? Absolutely: they come from Japan and the cost is likely to be quite significant. A masterfully executed graft is virtually undetectable.

Cordially,

Michael Persiano

Is it common for enthusiasts to purchase trees without seeing them? Or
at least viewing photos? I have never done this and I am just
wondering.

Maybe this post is in reference to ebay type auctions where you see a
"sample" and get a different tree?

Thanks,

Matt
