Sorry for the off topic stuff, but I just finished watching Garry Kasparov
play to a draw with "Deep Jr.." Anybody else catch that or have been
following the matches? I can't believe that GK agreed to draw in such a
dominant position...

Kind regards,

Yup. Watching a chess match is a bit like watching someone wire
a tree.

Exactly right! Fascinating!

Actually, one can learn a GREAT deal by watching an adept wire a tree.
Given a 3 or 4 hour wiring session for a tree, there are amazing
opportunities to learn important stuff. Like chess, its instructional value
is heightened if you understand something of the basic patterns involved.
Variation and deviation from norms are often enlightening. I highly
recommend it.

I agree that you can learn alot from watching chess but it is kind of like
anything else, you have to have a basic understanding or else it is just two
guys moving pieces around on a board. I don't understand enough of the
strategies involved to make it interesting for me. I would rather watch
Wimbledon or the Beach Volleyball tournaments.

Actually, an "adept" would merely say "Shazam!" or something, and
lo, the tree would be wired. ;-)

But if wiring turns your crank, have at it and watch away. I
know how, but I hate doing it, so I usually go to the next demo
room when the wiring begins (where -- almost always -- they're
doing the same thing!) ;-)
