How does one measure trunk size/width, especially when there is nebari, or a
slanted trunk?

Usuall you measure the circumference at the point where the curve between
nebari and trunk stops, then divide by pye (whateevr that is - been a long
time since Iwas at school) to find the diameter.

A lot of us, on the other hand, merely lay a ruler across the
tree and eyeball the diameter. As for where, as Colin says, the
widest part of the trunk is just above the spread of the roots.

In real life, one would measure a trunk at breast height --
usually agreed to be about 4 feet -- hence the terminology,
"x-feet dbh" for x feet diameter, breast height. You'd have to
choose where that was on a bonsai. It probably would NOT be at
the thickest point, and since we like to brag about how fat our
trunks are (as opposed to ourselves ;-) it would not be the
preferred spot.

_I_ measure the width, which is called the caliper, at the thickest part
ABOVE the nebari. I realize that for many many bonsai this somewhat
ambiguous. If I need to be really accurate, I state the distance above some
fixed reference at which the measurement is taken, such as the rim of the
pot or the soil line, or some artifact on the trunk. This measurement gives
the most meaningful 'size'. In general, I am looking for the diameter at
the point at which it will stay nearly the same for some distance. That
puts it above the buttress.

On ebay you are likely to see most anything, including circumference, which
almost totally meaningless, or the width of the nebari which might be
interesting, but of little value in judging the trunk.

For what it's worth, you can also use tree calipers. I got mine a long time
ago from A.M. Leonard. They're aluminum and spread to about 8-10 inches which will
work for most of our bonsai.
As mentioned by Colin, you can also measure the circumference and divide by
pi.

A caliper would work well too. No need for calculations or eyeballing the trunk.
Just find the place Colin talks about, make sure it's level, and adjust accordingly
and hold it to a ruler.

God I need a drink, alcoholic of course after the heavy chapters involving
