[IBC] Epsom Salt and Fertilizers

Epsom Salt and FertilizersYes, its known as "Peters" here in Mexico. The person who sold me the products told me to dissolve 1 gram per liter of water and also, as Nina recommended me, I asked this person about the micronutrients issue and she suggested me to use another product in conjunction with the "Peters", and exactly in the same way (one gram per liter of water). But now I am a little bit confuse, do you think I can apply BOTH fertilizers in just one liter of water? Or should I prepare TWO liters with one gram of the general one plus one gram of the micronutrients? Also and following your advice, should I apply just half gram per liter of water?

Have a nice day,

Roberto

Roberto,

The fertilizer sounds like the stuff marketed by Miracle Grow and Peters here in the US. Mix it up at half-strength or less - you shouldn't really be able to see the bluish color if it's diluted properly. The epsom salts I use are in tiny balls about a centimeter in diameter and dissolve slowly. I'd put about a teaspoon on your juniper.

Technically the two should probably be applied from different containers of
water due to the possibility of an adverse reaction between the chemicals. Most
likely they could affect how the other dissolves in the water. However in a
practical sense it probably doesn't matter.

Don't fret about it. Your trees aren't chemists and unless you
SIGNIFICANTLY overdose your trees (like a handful of fertilizer
to a gallon of water) they'll use what they want and the rest
will run off through your soil at your next watering. People
worry WAY too much about half strength vs. full strength. Follow
label directions and you won't go wrong. And yes you can add the
Epsom salt to the same gallon of water.

HOWEVER you don't need to (or want to) add Epsom to every
fertilizing session. All of the houseplant fertilizers (Peters,
Miracle Gro, etc.) are well supplied with micronutrients and you
shouldn't have to add anything unless one of your plants is
showing obvious chlorosis (yellow leaves with green along the
veins).

[IBC] Epsom Salt and Fertilizers

Jim,

First of all, let me thank you for your comments, I really appreciate it. Now, coming back to fertilizers. If I understood correct, there is no difference if I apply both fertilizers together (Regular one and Micronutrients) in one liter of water and it doesn't matter if I do it on half doses or full one, am I right? Also and as Tom recommended me, I should apply the Epsom Salt only once a month and per your commentary, I should only do it if my trees are having problems. Well, let me tell you that this issue about fertilizers and Epson Salt came along as I was telling the forum that I am having problems with my Juniperus (it has lost a lot of strength, color and "LEAVES" -sorry, I don't know the correct word in English-), so one solution was to be careful with the fertilizer and to add Epson Salt. As everything on Bonsai, I am going to "test" the different approaches and I will let you know all what happened. Once again let me thank you.

Have a nice day,

Roberto

Billy,

Thank you for your advise and time. I guess that by the answers I have received, I am going to "try" mixing both fertilizers in one liter of water but at half strength. If nothing happens this time, then I will try the full strength. I am sure that you coincide with me that it will be SAFER to do it this way, it is always preferable to under dose the trees than over dose them, am I right?

Best Regards,

Roberto

Well, is it safer to underdose than overdose? You will not kill a
plant from underdosing, but too small a dose might just waste fertilizer and be
ineffective.
If a doctor prescribes you a medication would you take half a dose?

I agree with Billy, it is better to underdose than overdose, but I've always done the Epsom Salt thing another way. Herb Gustafson once told me to just sprinkle it on like I was seasoning meat on my BBQ. So, a couple times a season I do. When I water, the salts dissolve, and that's that. Simple. I've got enough mixing to do with just my regular fertilization, I don't need any more and Herb's method works.
