Trying to rescue Needle Juniper N. fo boston, a little help?

Hi!

My significant other brought home a needle juniper, or at least I think it
is. It was potted in a 4"x4" pot about 6" high. It is the kind they sell
with the glued on top gravel.

When she found it the soil was almost completely dry, and most of the tips
were dry and brown. Watered it a week ago, and got a grow lamp for it.
Now the greenery seems to be recovering.

My problem was however that the soil was still completely damp today, after
not watering for a week. I got a soil moisture meter, and I could tell the
dirt was completely soaked just by the way the probe went in. The needle on
the metter pegged at maximum. I repotted the plant using river stones (it's
what I had) to form a stone cup, taking out about half of the soil, which is
still soaking wet. So that part I think I did right.

Now I'm wondering when to take it outdoors, or to the basmeent. I
understand that this is an outdoor variety. Given that I've just replanted
it, and that it's recovering I'm not really sure about taking it outside
yet.

Advice?

Thanks!
