I presumed that Youkou Bonsai is owned by Michael
Persiano. I ordered from it. (Although I was reluctant to open a PayPal account. They ask for way more information than is necessary, in my opinion.) I used a mycorrizal additive in my soil mixes about 10-12- years ago. The company seiling it went out of business. Once a feild was innoculated, it stayed that way and repreat sales were not forthcoming. I had excellent growth when using this product.
Now I notice Mycrooizi are popular again. Besides Roots there is a 5-5-5- plant food from Whitney Farms (McLellan, Oregon) called "Life Link" It has 400,000 viable organisms per pound, with a 3 year shelf life. There is another product sold on tap (premixed) at some Summer Winds Nurseries (formerly Woolworths) called Soil Soup by a company of the same name in Seattle. Also the gardening catalogue ??Plants Alive?? has had some mycoohisial mixes. Bonsaiists and others who change soils regularly may benefit from added mycorrhiza especially if we use materials that are sterile and devoid of such, but any plant from real dirt should have its own colony. I recycle discarded old mycorrized soil and blend it with new compost so will make new michorrhize and than use this compost back in the new mix ( 2-3 years later )when change soil in my trees so I make a circle with the mychorrize. I think plants grow in spite of what we do to them. One year we use aluminum wire, the next copper, one year remove all soil and wash roots, next year leave some soil, buy imported soils, use local soils, and so forth.
Everytime I have done a drastic shift in my methods, I loose plants. Plants just don't think as fast as we do. My other pet theory is that a plant gets so confused after the hands of the third master restyle in three years that the stress makes them commit suicide. As long as you and the plant agree on care, then leave well enough alone. I didn't order the mycorrhizal Roots product, since I'm
pretty sure that mycorrhiza from one species root system is not very helpful to another species. I had excellent results with the original Roots product. I hope what I ordered is the same thing. The early version brought a profusion of roots to a tree I had grown for several years and had still been very unsturdy in the pot. I notice they are hiding their MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet), so I may be getting a "new and improved" version. I think Nina mentioned a while back that she though the main ingredient was humic acid. I know what I ordered is different in form, since the earlier version was liquid and this is available only in dry form. We'll see if it makes a difference. I am the faceless, nameless character to which Michael aimed everyone towards for Roots products. Michael and I are friends and through some of his guidance and advice I now carry the Roots products. I apologize for the anonymity on my website, that was not my intention, and I will remedy that by putting some personal information on it. For now let me introduce myself. My name is Keith Smith, I have been on this list for a few years now. I normally sit back and read comments and occasionally chime in, I find that I learn more by listening or in this case reading. I have been involved with bonsai for almost 14 years. The reason I started carrying products for bonsai is simple, no one in my area (Eastern North Carolina) carried bonsai products. The closest distributor was almost 5 hours away. I am a member of Triangle Bonsai Society (TBS), and after hearing several people ask about products I decided to give it a try. I started with soil first, selling to TBS and its members and slowly branched out from there. If anyone has questions please feel free to contact me. . I hope this has cleared the air some. When you are checking out, if you do not have a paypal account there is a place you can click on that says "If you do not currently have a PayPal account Click Here. This will then walk you through a regular credit card check out. I don't blame anyone for not wanting to put a bunch of information about themselves. The reason I use PayPal is, the charges are less than going through a bank or other Merchant Services companies. This way I can keep my prices lower. Once again, I hope this helps. I agree with you it is an interesting theory and anyway plants are a form of life that reacts slower than animals but react .. their language is chemical My Wanda orchid was protuding her roots over a African violet the tip of teh roots of Wanda start withering .. , so I noticed and turned put more distance and all was ok the roots start growing again plants recognize the person thet care for them it was told many years ago about a study made by a nurologist in Geneva 40 yars ago Dr Moody He said that if someone burns or badly treat a plant when the person gets into her environment again the plants reacts with signals of panick an hoax a tale story ? who knows ?
