Well, that depends . . . on a lot of things.

Is it the first basic shaping that you're gonna do?

Is the tree already in a bonsai pot?

Is the tree still in a nursery pot?

Did you dig it from the "wild" recently? When? Where is it
growing now?

Are we talking about PRUNING or pinching growth to keep its
shape?

You really don't want to transplant AND prune heavily at the
same time. So if the tree is still in a nursery pot and you
plan on putting it into a bonsai training pot next spring (you
weren't really planning to put it in a BONSAI pot the first
time, were you?), now would probably be OK in the northern
hemisphere. But don't overdo. Leave it fairly bushy, repot in
the spring, let it settle in (through the summer) then finish
the basic shaping in the fall again. Then, let it grow for 3-4
years, only pinching new growth as needed.

THEN you can think about a bonsai pot and more definitive
shaping.
