[IBC] Off topics (longish)
I VERY rarely voice an opinion on this list but exactly WHAT here "appears to
be propagated by seemingly few members?" Someone--who possibly has someone close serving overseas-- submitted a post, the contents of which were clearly identified. Even after opening it, one had a choice of whether or not to download the link; it was also CLEARLY IDENTIFIED as off-topic. What's the big deal here? I belong to a number of lists--no one seems to have a problem with off-topic posts, as long as they're identified as such and. As regards spam, despite its driving me crazy, I'm with AOheLl for the long haul. Its spam filter is extremely effective once you customize it; I get virtually none of the junk other subscribers mention, not even in my spam folder. Whatever does slip through is easily disposed of with a click of the "delete" button and non-spam, once identified as such, never ends up in the spam folder again. I'm sure that other ISP's provide similar services. I really wouldn't like to think that it's the particular subject of the "offending" post that has some members up in arms. Do ALL off-topic posts receive such vociferous objections or have I just overlooked them? Have these been ones "propagated by seemingly just a few members?" If you have good spam filters, a good ISP (NOT AOL, MSN etc.), and spyware/virus protection all the newsgroup adds is a little aggravation on fairly rare occasions. I rarely get spam anymore on AOL, now my email at work which supposedly has firewalls and all the "good" corporate restrictions gets about 75 spam offers a day.
