makeing your own pots
 

does any one have any expeirence with making their own bonsai pots?

I make some of my own pots, usually smaller ones. I
work at a facility that has a very nice slab roller
for flat even sheets of clay. You have to use a clay
that has a lot of grog which will hold its shape when
other types of clay become more plastic during firing.
The kilns at this facility are for high firing at
cone 10 or 11. The larger the pot the more care has
to go into the design so that there are no stress
points that encourage cracking.

well, I am currently taking a ceramics class for fun. right now we are
using Armstrong, which is fairly gritty. All pieces will be fired at
cone 10 unless we specify otherwise, so I don't have to worry much
about that. thanks for the info, I will just have to buckle down and get
my rolling pin out.

Freeform bonsai pots are very easy to make, but pots with perfectly straight
edges and beautiful round and oval pots made on the wheel take quite a lot
of practice. For anybody in Sydney or close by, I am holding a workshop on
the 20th March to make freeform Bonsai pots. Several people who are
attending have never used clay before and I am shore they will make two or
three pots in a day. If anybody is interested please contact me off list.
