[IBC] For Sale?

In a message dated 3/14/05 12:04:34 AM, Craig writes:
why it is that people always ask if my trees are for sale?

This is common. I get it with bonsai displays; the orchid club gets it at
shows, etc. People are used to things being displayed for sale, so they don't
know the difference, especially when you have a show and vendors also. The only
solution is to put up a sign Not for Sale, or tell people, No, this is part of
my personal collection. To add to the confusion, at cat & dog shows (probably
horses too), some of the animals are for sale, so people figure it doesn't
hurt to ask.

I didn't want to detract from the display with a sign that said "Not
for sale" although that certainly could be a solution. I already had
signs up that said "Please Don't Touch" so probably another sign would
be too much. Good thought though. My solution was just to respond that
the trees are part of my personal collection.

And it probably doesn't. They'll never know unless they do and
who knows, someone might say "yes."

Ben Oki had the best retort for this question.
When he answered that the tree he was working on was not for sale, the
persistent watcher asked: " But if it were for sale, what would it go for?"
Ben answered: " $1000."
The next question was: "Why so much?"
Ben's reply: " I put 100 hours of labor into this tree. Is my time worth
$10 an hour?" Then he answered parenthetically: "But it's not for sale."
End of discussion.

Craig, a bit off topic but this caused me to chuckle a bit about my
experience with signs. My business partner was ALWAYS amazed that when we
had something new at a bonsai convention that wouldn't sell, if I put a sign
on it telling what it was they would immediately start to sell. Funny, but
people are often afraid to simply ask what some tool or impliment is for if
they don't know.
Another thing I had to do when I USED TO DO home & garden shows
locally and sell bonsai. I usually had one very nice treefor sale ( which
never sold) amongst the $15-30 retail stuff ( glad I stopped that). Anyway,
after about the 300th person asked "How old is that tree" I decided to put a
sign on it..."This tree is approximately 50 years old"...
I thought this would solve some of my continually answering the same
questions problem.
Well....I soon discovered I needed a sign just below the first one that said
"YES, This tree is REALLY 50 years old!"
:)
Dale

P.S. Later I'll tell the stories about people picking up trees and turning
them upside down to look at the bottoms ....

no more H&G shows.
