[IBC] American Red Maple
 

I tend to agree with Anita, but if you want to try one, you would be better
off with a collected one. I have one I have been fighting with since 1991, and
it is only beginning to look like something. In my experience, it does not bud
back easily on the lower trunk. However, if allowed to run loose, it will
give you some long stringy twigs suitable for thread grafting. I am planning to
do this.

A collected one probably would be a good idea. As I mentioned, I have
two. One is about 120 years old with a great base and already has good
main branches. The other is about 50 years old and has a marvelous
base. This one I cut back to just a bare trunk. It's been three years
since collection, and I just repotted/root pruned it. It budded back
well on the lower trunk, and now I'm working on the new apex. Still a
few years to go.

Man, if only alders made good bonsais, I'd be the king of bonsai land.
We have a couple of (I think) sugar maples around, but they're way too
big to bonsai.

I am trying to air layer a huckleberry that's growing in the ravine
next to my house. If I can pull it off it will be a cool iliterati
bonsai, but from what I can find it's really hard to grow
huckleberries.
