Hi, and welcome to a great Hobby!

You have received some excellent advice from earlier answers to your
inquiry. I would like to add a couple of comments:

-- Be prepared to lose the first couple of bonsai you try. It takes
a while to learn to keep them alive! All of us have killed many
small trees on the way to becoming experienced hobbyists. Get two or
three inexpensive "pre-bonsai" plants from a local landscape or
garden store. (NOT finished bonsai)

-- Learn as much as you can - from the WebSites sited, local
hobbyists and club, from questions and answers on this IBC forum.

-- I would suggest trying Juniper, Elm, Corkscrew willow,
Boxwood, or Ficus (Fig) as available and fairly easy to grow.
