What's an allotment?

I've seen many folks allude to their "allotment". Is it like a
community garden in cities in the states, or something else?

Just curious.

English for "community garden;" often (always?) an annual rental fee, and
generally rules for upkeep.

Believe its an individual section of the community garden assigned to one
person for their gardening. Their piece of dirt so to speak.
