I let the yellow Iris here form seed pods , and today I harvested a few
seeds . Anybody ever propagate these from seed rather than bulb division ?

Yes, we've planted the seed of both Dutch and Louisiana iris in the
past. LA iris is easier to propagate from the rhizome pieces but the
Dutch iris seed did propagate but took longer to mature. Basically it's
a crap shoot though, some did, some didn't.

I did a little searching after asking , found that this is done all the
time . If I have "bearded" iris' they will not breed true , could get almost
anything. A real surprise to me the other day , two of the gladiolus I
planted earlier this summer have bloomed - pretty !
The spring/bulb flowers were a bit weak this year , but it was also their
*first* year so ... with any luck the marigolds in the rose gardenwill
self-seed too , giving us color well into the summer .

Louisianna irises will grow easily from seed. Keep the pods in a cool dry
place until your spring then plant out the seeds either direct or in seed
trays. You will need to keep them damp. While the LI will grow in water it
doesn't need to be in water, it can be kept quite well in the garden or a
pot as long as you don't let it dry out too much especially in hot weather.
It will need at least part sun to flower well.

I have no idea what these are or their history . I got a bunch of yellow
and blue iris from someone who advertised - can't remember if it was the
local paper or the online yard sale thing . These pods are from the yellow ,
which look a lot more like lilys than Iris to me .
I think the wife is going to be surprised next spring , she was a bit
disappointed this year , but all this stuff (iris , daffodils , roses ,
tulips , etc) was planted last fall and early winter .
