Tomatoes - to plastic or not to plastic?

Has anyone ever tried those mail-order plastics used to cover the
ground around tomato plants? These materials are used to keep the
weeds down and reflect the sunlight/heat. Recently we tried a heavy
duty landscape material without seeing a difference. The material
constantly pulled away from the tack downs and the weeds popped
through any way. Any suggestions? Are the mail-orders better? Is
there really a difference between the red and black plastics?

Hardly scientific, but my dad and I both tried the red plastic under
half of our tomatoes. We didn't notice a difference between those with
and those without.
