It's 8 or 9 months from planting before they are ready to pick. You
could break off just one, but they are pretty small, about 1/2 inch, so
you will probably need more then one at a time. Be sure to stake the
bulblet stalk so they will reach their maximum size, otherwise the stalk
will bend over from the weight before getting as big as it can. I run
some trellis netting horizontally over the onion bed about two feet up,
that way I don't need to stake each one.
