Keeping soil warm for seed-sprouting. It should be really
excellent for rooting cuttings as well.

Review:

Many garden seeds sprout better and faster at temperatures
from 70-85 F. However, we keep our house much cooler than
that - around 60 F daytimes and 55 F at night. I felt the
traditional places with my hand - top of fridge, top of
water heater - and neither felt at all warm to the touch. I
guess they're well-insulated. (The water heater's new, we
bought it last year.) We have a heating pad (the kind you
put on a sore back) but it gets WAY too hot for this
purpose.

I wanted a soil heating mat, but they are quite expensive:
$45 and up. So I decided on this mini-greenhouse and, so
far, I'm pleased with it.

It arrives flat, and you have to assemble it but it's really
easy - you just slot the end walls into the side wall/roof
piece. Then the side/end unit just sits on top of the base.

There are two ventilation holes in each end wall and a
little plastic piece that can block the vent holes if you
want more humidity. It's supposed to slide back and forth,
but doesn't. As far as we can see, the plastic piece is
either on or off.

The base gets warm. The instructions say to put your
plant-starting container (little plastic 9-cell or 6-cell
packs, in my case) in a foil pan. We bought two cheap foil
pans that fit nicely in the greenhouse.

The greenhouse will hold four of the 6-cell or 9-cell packs.

It feels nice and warm. Evidently, the seeds are happy: I
started some tomato and bok choy seeds two days ago and the
bok choy seeds are already sprouting! That's pretty fast.

Juggling the four packs that are all that will fit in the
mini-greenhouse will be a bit of a problem, and I could use
more space, but this will have to do for now.

Hopefully, by the time I want to start more seeds that
require warmth, the first batch will be out of the
mini-greenhouse and on the shelves, under lights. I think
this will actually work out pretty well.
