Default Potting soil for substrate

Does anyone have experiences using potting soil as a substrate?

I like to put 1" of soil at the bottom and cover it with 2.5" of gravel.

I read somewhere the other day that potting soil has too much organic
material in it. It was by someone from Davis, CA who uses local soil.

Can't remember the URL.

I would keep away from potting soil (as substrate). You'll have a big mess
on your hands, tank, filters, water.

Yeah I tried it, and I was very very sorry I did. mess does not describe it.
I now use peatmoss under the gravel.

I've done it but remember that many potting soils contain lots of light weight
organic particals that will float. When I do it I always use mushroom compost
or something similar. This type of compost is heavy and will stay under the
sand. it's also a good idea to put a barier of egg crate lighting panel over
the compost to prevent fish from digging it up.

remove nospam from e-mail to send to me, I grow trees in aquariums like bonsai.
I breed dwarf crayfish, great for planted community tanks. If you can get me a
shovelnose sturgeon fingerling (Scaphirhynchus platorynchus) no wild caught
please, contact me
