new planted tank setup- what about the filter?
i just setup a 55g tank, i read somewhere that the carbon filter stuff
is bad for a planted tank. do i just take those out and let the filter run to circulate water? i have a whisper or penguin 330 or 350 or something, dual spinning wheels. |

Yep - let the filter run at the very least for good biological filtration (i.e. the wheels). You might want to use a layer of mechanical filtration media too though (i.e. filter wadding the water would have to go through so solids are trapped in the filter and you can remove it periodically). Good luck and later! |

And you'll hear carbon adds phosphate and you'll hear it removes iron and/or trace elements. Whatever. It makes your water clean and smelling nice. We use the same stuff in brita filters to make wate so clean girls in blue swimsuits dive into the stuff that comes out of these plastic cannisters if you can believe TV ads. Good stuff that carbon. It has to be high quality carbon, but I've never seen any difference using it and not using it that I could attriute to carbon. Change your water and fertilze and you really needn't sweat anything else, it'll all just click. Did I mention the importance of reqular frequent no kidding don't put it of till tomorrow again water changes? Why are you still sitting there, get up and go get a hose. -- Need Mercedes parts ? - http://parts.mbz.org Richard Sexton | Mercedes stuff: http://mbz.org 1970 280SE, 72 280SE | Home page: http://rs79.vrx.net 633CSi 250SE/C 300SD | http://aquaria.net http://killi.net |

If you are using a liquid fertilizer, carbon could filter it right out
of the water. That is, until the carbon has been in there for a while (week?), by then the carbon has soaked up all it is going to and could be taken out all the same. |
