Eco-Complete Review? (cross Post fm rec.freswater.misc)

I'm setting up a new 90 gal discus/planted tank and thought I'd give it
a try rather then the Flourite Red that I have in the other tank. (I've
had no problems with the Flourite, just thought I'd try something else.)
Here's a link:

One thing I have noticed is the massive root growth I've had in
comparison to leaves in my old tank. A few more leaves and less roots would
make me happy, but perhaps not my plant!

84F, 6.2 ph, 3KH, 55 gallons, 130watts/10-12 hrs, Marineland 350 with
Fluval XP2.

Thanks!

Jim C.

Are you already using the Eco-Complete Plant Substrate? How much did
you use for 90 gal and how does it look?

I used Eco-Complete in my 180 gallon tank and it looks great at first.
The black color is really a nice contrast in the tank. Over time though
you begin to notice that there are white or gray rocks of various size
in there as well. Has no bearing on anything other than aesthetics.

As for how effective it is, it's hard for me to say. My Ludwigia's are
growing out of control, but my sword plants have never really taken
off. It's either that there's not enough iron or not enough light (I am
guessing it's probably not enough light in my tank).

I was actually thinking of going with a custom mix next time of
flourite red, peat moss, and a thin top layer of black sand...but
that's still some ways off.

No, I havn't uses it used it yet, I'm just settitting up the tank. (Sorry
for the long delay, I've been sick.) Perhaps i should do a 50/50 blend with
'normal' gravel?
