Aquatic Plants in the UK
 

Hi all,

Does anyone know of any aquatic retailers who have a good selection of
plants anywhere near me (I live in England, UK, between London and
Cambridge.)? I've been to 5 places in the last week and none have
anything I can use for carpeting and most have non-aquatic plants on
sale as if they were aquatic - up to 50% of their stock is like this in
some cases. I particularly want Glossostigma elantinoides and/or
Riccia fluitans and/or Hemianthus callitrichoides and Ludwigia
inclinata var. Verticulata (Cuba).

Alternatively, if anyone knows a reliable mail-order company shipping
within or to the UK that would be great too.

Any help would be very gratefully received.

There has been a debate on just this subject on UK.REC.AQUARIA.MISC so
it would probably be worth checking this out...

Personally, I go in and ask the LFS when they are expecting their
deliveries - usually they arrive Thursday/Friday ready for the weekend
rush...I try to get in before the Saturday rush...

Yes, I chatted to them about deliveries and went in to look yesterday
and today (depending on the date they were delivered in each shop) and
found myself still out of luck. I just think they're not that hot on
plants around here.


Have you got a Maidenhead near you? I've found that they will order
stuff in for me if I ask...

(Big Smile) - just went to the Enfield branch of Maidenhead Aquatics
yesterday and stocked my tank (plants not fish)! I couldn't get even
half of my first choice plants, but I got some other beauties. It
looks wonderful, if a little cloudy from the Aquasoil. I am really
pleased with it. The plants looks really healthy too. Dave, the
manager, did offer to do a special order for me when I spoke to him
over the phone but I decided against it in the end because it's quite a
trek for me to get down to them and I didn't want to have to do the
journey again for a while. My biggest change of plan was my choice of
carpetting plant. I was looking for Glossostigma elantinoides or
Hemianthus callitrichoides but they had nothing like that. They did
have a good number of Amazon microsword's - Lilaeopsis which I used.
Each pot had loads of plant in it and I was able to plant the whole
floor with 5 pots by teasing it out into small clumps and spreading
them around.

When I get around to uploading them I'll post up a link to some photo's
I took of it.
