I am using the Nutrafin Bubble Diffuser/Counter with DIY CO2. The
system works great in diffusing the CO2 bubbles into the water. The
only problem is a rather quick and significant build-up of a
white-string/slime at the exit from the tubing into the diffuser that
also creeps up the "rungs" of the diffuser. I researched this on the
Internet and have tried adding an intermediate separation chamber
between my CO2 source and the diffuser. This chamber is a glass jar
where the gas enters at the bottom and exits at the top. I have tried
this separation technique with both water and no water. I have also
tried plastic beads in the chamber to give the "slime" a surface to
adhere to. All of these attempts have failed; I still get the quick
buildup of slime on the diffuser and no slime in the separation
chamber.

Does anyone else have this problem and has anyone found a solution?

I have the same problem. My setup is slightly different, I place the
output of CO2 line into the intake of my filter. I get the same
buildup you describe. I haven't really noticed any major side effects
of the slime. I suspect it is some of the yeast or surgar being
released with the CO2 gas. I have thought about using some sort of
filter to try and get it out, but have not gone as far as you have.
If it is yeast, it would seem that bulbing the CO2 through something
to kill it might work.

I'm interested in hearing others responses as well.

No, I haven't seen it on my diffuser. I do have a problem with algae
and tank crud building up, but it doesn't generally impede operation, so
I don't worry to much about it.

The other post about bits of yeast leaking out sounds kinda spot on to
me, but never having seen the issue, I can't really judge too well.

I was wondering if it is some kind of bacteria or similar thriving on high
CO2 water ?

I am sure mine didn't leak anything, so the slime build up must come from
something else. I normally clean the whole bubble Diffuser once a week, as
algae sems to like growing on it as well. Haven't noticed any problems due
to the slime.
