Water Hardness and plant growth

Does hard water affect plant growth ? Just tested mine and it was
about 300ppm.
Got some good filtered water, did a 20% change, and retested, it is
going down. Can high water hardness stunt plant growth ?

No.
As a rule, I have had much better results growing plants in hard water
vs soft water.
CO2 is the issue.
While there are some *possible* exceptions and very few (maybe one or
two) as a rule most plants like hard water from what I've seen in the
field where aquatic plants grow and do well.
You are talking about GH here? My Gh was around 450ppm. Some locations
I've seen nice plant growth(swords, stem plants etc) have been over
700ppm.

KH is another matter.

That is a common belief, but I think it might be mistaken. Read Chuck's post
from a couple of weeks ago, called "AGA Conference (LONG!!!)." He talks about
a fascinating presentation by Claus of Tropica. I'll quote Chuck's post in
part, in case the original has already scrolled off:

That was absolutely the biggest lesson I learned at the convention.
Plant like hard water. And it makes sense, since hard water contains
MORE stuff the plants need (calcium and magnesium) and soft water
contains less. Why would any plant prefer to grow in "empty" water?

As for the angels...I think they'll be okay, too. Unless they are wild-caught,
they will likely adjust to any reasonable tank parameters. I've heard of them
being bred in water up to 8.5, and I personally had no problem getting them to

Yup, I've seen the same thing. Most farm raised angels never seen
the very soft amazon type water that the fish originated in.

Tom,

Thanks fou your input as well as all the others. I am slowly learning,
but have a long way to go. My KH is about 107. What is the difference
between Geberal hardness and KH ?

Thanks.

Carmine
