Growing Val in Softwater

Does Val grow better in hard water?
I have some planted in a 15 gallon tank.
with 4 watt/gallon lighting using PL tubes.
Other plants thrive, even some of the high
light, more demanding types.
E. tennelus send runners in less than 1 week after planting.
But some of my Vals are turning yellow,
shedding their leaves which later become floaters.
Curiously, other Vals planted in the same
vicinity send runners furiously though their leaves
showing some holes in them....

My tank has zero Nitrite and it has 2 Ottos, 2 SAEs, 2 Rasboras,
and a juvenile Firemouth. They seem to be doing OK. The tank is a little
cloudy and spot algae is appearing on front glass. CO2 injection thro
yeast reactor (approx 8-9ppm) and gH is 2

Glad if you could help :-)

Happy Holidays!
