Default amazon sword brown leaves? KNO3?

My amazon sword plant is growing good, but all of the new leaves are brown
and remain that way without turning green even when they are bigger. I have
heard that this is because of a lack of nitrates in the water. How can I
increase this? Some people say you have to add potassium nitrite to the
water...how does one go about doing this? Is 10ppm where you want to be with
the nitrate value?

THANX!!
Dave.

Are you sure they aren't *supposed* to be that colour? I mean, is it
actually dead/dying, or just one of the exotic red forms that some talented
horticulturist devoted his entire adult life toward cultivating? What kind
of sword is it?

No, when I bought the plants from the store they had giant tear-drop shaped
green leaves. The plant grows tall stems before breaking out into these
giant leaves. Sorry I don't know what exact type of Amazon it would be, I'm
pretty new to all this.

Thanx!
