can a co2 tube exhaust directly into intake of Aquaclear filter?
 

I'm seriously doing some big-time research now into DIY co2 generators. It's
looking easier and easier. I'm planning to skip the idea of having a reactor
and for now have the bubbles directly pumping into my 15gal. aquarium. Can I
put the exhaust tubing from the generator directly up in the intake tube on
my Aquaclear power filter? I'm thinking it can suck in the bubbles and the
tubine will mash them up and the gases will be longer kept in the water by
the filter...being absorbed more slowly.

p.s., also, can one paint or darken the co2 bottle? Will it affect the
chemical process any? I'd like to do it just for asthetics :)

Yes. In some models a small bubble will form at the impeller and cause a
slight rattling. My old Rena did; my new AquaVia doesn't.

Hi There,

You may haev a problem with a co2 pocket forming in your filter... A co2
reactor is just as easy if not easier to build then the DIY bottle of co2,
at least you know the reactor will not fizz out of yeast haha.

Before I switched to the Hagen Plant-Gro diffuser/reactor, I used to
have the CO2 bubbles intake directly into my Eclipse 2 hood/filter,
and that seemed to work ok.

I'm currently doing exactly this with my AQ.

About a second after each bubble enters the tube, I hear a *shick*
sound as CO2 hits the impellar.

Also, at the top of the tube where it makes a 90 degree turn
downwards, CO2 accumulates at this highpoint. This actually seems
like a very good thing since the water flowing past this CO2 pocket
will slowly dissolve some of the CO2 as it flows by.

I get about 20-25 ppm CO2 levels in my 5 gal. this way using a 1L
reactor bottle.

Hmm...no, the aquaclear outflow is just under the surface of the water so it
creates little turbulence. :)
