Default 'roots' on java fern

I've been told that the brown 'roots' growing out of my java fern arne't
really roots at all.. does this mean i can chop it off at will without
harming the plant?
I know that i don't want to chop off the parts that are clinging to the
driftwood, but what about the rest? it's friggen ugly!
